Oh… The days of summer…
For me and millions of others like me, summer means one thing…
It’s time to start preparing for hunting season in Fall. That means getting my equipment prepared, working on my lease, and spending weekends with my children polishing our marksmanship skills.
Where I live in Arizona the heat can be a bit much in the middle of the day. But first thing in the morning or after the day starts cooling off it’s a perfect time for children to accompany mom or dad to the range or to the back 40.
A dozen pop cans and cash if they really want to have some FUN – even some random packets of tannerite!
Most people in the US have consistent weather during the summer. Even in the south and southwest, summer days can be generally pleasant provided you get out before the middle, hottest part of the day.
If you are going to the range, most major structures will be provided. If headed to your own area, make sure you bring some type of shade. A simple patio umbrella can do the trick, but one of the easy up shades with four legs and, sometimes, a wall or two can do wonders for your comfort.
Especially during the hotter parts of the day, you will want to make sure you allow your firearms to cool between rounds of shooting. One of the easiest ways to do this is to bring at least several firearms with you to shoot. Hot guns can affect accuracy, burn fingers, but, perhaps most importantly, can actually increase the risk of damage and wear to your barrel from shooting.
Make sure you bring lots of water and cold drinks – but never, ever anything with alcohol. One of the cardinal rules of firearm safety is the alcohol or drugs and gunpowder never mix.
Save the imbibery for AFTER your time at the range.
Having no pressure of competition, hunting, or an emergency. This is a good time to practice your technique.
If you carry a firearm for personal protection, make sure you practice drawing from your holster. We recommend some of the great holsters from our friends over at 1791 Dash with all different varieties for all different weapons at a great and affordable price, you should be able to find one for your firearm.
Summer is also a great time to check out, research, and purchase ammunition, gear and equipment for the rest of the year.
You can find everything you need on TheBestShootingSite.com. If you think we should be carrying something you don’t see, click here and let us know.
